Clogged Drains

There is hair plugging the bathroom sink, the kitchen sink is full of water – You have a clogged  drain. Many people reach for toxic and dangerous chemicals to help burn through whatever is clogging the drain. Fortunately, those chemicals are not required and many times are not even effective. Learn here how to clear that blocked drain.

First step is to clean the area immediately around the sink or plumbing drain that is clogged. Move furniture, towels, dishes, everything. This could get messy! Remove the built up water by transferring it to the toilet, bathtub or another sink. Clear the sink of what is immediately visible.

Use the plunger first to see if it will unclog stuck material. Many times there are items in the drain that will go down if re-adjusted. If the plunger doesn’t clear the drain, pull out the drain snake. Begin winding it down the drain. If you feel pressure continue slowly, allow it to work its way into the material clogging the drain.

Pull the drain snake out and remove the hair, toilet paper, material that has been clogging the drain. You will most likely not get it all the first time.

Repeat the drain snake step until you no longer pull any material out of the sink. You should not be able to pull anything else out of the drain. Test it to make sure water passes through it/ or that it flushes. If the blocked drain is a sink, install a sink guard or hair catcher to prevent materials which may clog from going down.

To maintain a clear and clog free sink, clean regularly with baking soda and vinegar followed by boiling water. Pour 1/4 cup baking soda down the drain. Follow with one cup of distilled white vinegar. Allow chemical reaction between two to take place (watch the volcano!). Let sit for 2 minutes. Follow with 1/2 gallon of boiling water. All residue will be cleaned from side of drain.
